Teaching old dogs new tricks

the Lob. Jurong East Sports Hall.

My body is aching, my arms are a bit soar, I am drench in sweat… but the sweet ache and pain are a welcome feeling I savor as I enjoy our few hours of playing with shuttlecock.

“Be under the shuttlecock, then hit your lob”

“Stabilize and extend your arm! Drop Shot”

“Wait, Wait , Wait… Hit!”

“Run, Run, Run”

“Control Your Stroke”

“Foot Work! This is not fencing!”

It was a funny yet learning experience with Gary. Our “teacher” for this new “workout” that a few friends and I are engrossed with now. Call it a desperate attempt to shed a few weight. Call it joining the bandwagon since it seems like it’s the “in” thing.  But I am enjoying this sweat breaking smashing activity.

Then Gary said to J, “Hey J, your making the same mistakes as Dianne!“. Everybody said “Uyyyyyy.” Hahahahaha… Sungog-sungog murag kinder.

He said teaching us how to play (the discipline not just simply getting into the court and play) is something he enjoys because we are beginners, meaning no hard coded bad habits stitched in our system when it comes to playing. It is much harder to correct rather than to teach.

Sometimes, no matter how much time he spends correcting a bad technique, one would always go back to what he is used to the moment he starts to swing the racket. A bad grip or incorrect footwork. Little things, but basic things that needs to be corrected, before he can teach a more advance program.

And I thought this is so much like life. There are habits, “reflexes“, reactions or way of thinking that we are often so used to having, that it is much harder to correct us on what is right. Corrections are simply calibrations that we need. Fine tuning that we need to undergo. Not so that we can be perfect and faultless… but to be able to be better.

So we could play better, and we can play the game right. 🙂  Both in and out of the court.

Oh my, this is my short and futile attempt for an update. Better something thatn nothing. I’ll try to write more, sometimes the words can’t keep up with what my mind wants to share here.

But 5 letters would best describe me right now… H.A.P.P.Y

Take Care everyone! 😀
